Food study

Long time no post!
Quick study(hour or two) of baby eggplants on top of an a4 sketchbook. So tiny and cute,
wish I had showed their scale! They went bad, so I had to use them for something.
I regret not eating them...

Moar to come sooooooooon :]

Rembrandtin'

Art history exam is coming up in two days :( My hands get ichy when reading about art, I can't help it. Painted mr Rembrandt instead of reading about him right away I guess.

Typical master study practice, I focused on recreating the use of light and colours, trying to figure out how this handsome, old devil worked. Thanks to wikipedias art-database project, I managed to get a real good look at the sexy brush-strokes: the original

I chose to copy his last known selfportrait(allthough he looks youger in this than some earlier ones). It is said that he didn't intend for his paintings to be as dark as we see them today, the warnish he used, is said to have darkened over time.

Anyway, I think I did capture something about the painting, hopefullly the use of light, maybe the skintones? I must have done something right this time :)

PS CS5, standard brushes,
step by step images are the 4 layers used.

Egh... Back to reading thick books umder presure.

Second try

This is an elf. With traditional pixie hair. Wanted her to look like she is part of some fictional culture and society. Nothing more to say about this motif.

Progress and final. Started this in august maybe? Forgot, and now, on saturday, reworked it for another 10 hours. Ha. Not especially proud of this. Maybe I'll pick it up once again if I get some good tips...

This was not a prosess of painting but of nothing but corecting. Might have something to do with the staring the picture as a stylistic sort of thing, and ending it in trying to be "correct"

Photoshop, basic brushes and one homemade.
30-40 hours LOL snail slow

Last intense session

Last ones! The gray one is 40 min session and the yellowish one is maybe 3 hours? I didn't keep track...

When I concentrate while playing games, solving problems or drawing I don't blink. I forgot that while desperately trying to put in all the proportions correctly. Strained my eye! It hurts looking to the sides. I feel silly.

Sorry for the even more crappy snapshots than regular. The paper this time is the same, the photos look different cause i tried to do some quick balance fixes in PS.

I fell into the trap of long session=stiff figure :( Still, I feel I learned a lot this week

I hope I'll get to do some more life drawing soon. I feel a strong need for some hardcore classical training :B Maybe some boring still life again?

MOAR life model drawing

Some of the sketches from todays session. Sort of strange, I feel a lot of progress. And I can see actual progress in the 5 second sketches. Third try(the ones in this post) has far more marks/detail compared to the first two. Feels strange because I rarely feel this sort of improvement.

Some of these done with trusty old brush pen, then I swiched to charcoal. I never use charcoal, so don't be too hard on me :]

These are 5 second, 6 minute and 12 minute sketches(all on a3 format paper). The last one(yellowish one) is done in 40 minutes (on a2 format). I still kind of suck at drawing large. Somehow painting large is easier to me while drawing is harder.

More to come on friday, after the last session! :]
Maybe something in colour tomorow?

Life drawing nudes

Some of the work from the last two days. Training figurative drawing tickles my brain in a lovely way. Wouldn't mind improving my skillz.

I do love life model drawing, so glad I have the opportunity atm. More to come this week!

Ye old banner

I don't really make them as banners, but that is what they are.
The old one was just a stand-in, quickly picked out from a random sketch. I figured everyone are probably heartbroken and miss the old banner very much. So here is the original unfinished study I used for it.

It's my plant, Kate, she stands next to the monitor, was fitting to paint a study of it :] Ficus Ginseng if I am correct, some sort of a bonzai tree.

A bit late to finish it now, lacks leaves in winter and has gotten somewhat taller. I'm a slow worker sometimes :]
